Mötley Crüe kicked off their summer long stadium tour with Def Leppard, Joan Jett and Poison this week, but the biggest news of opening night wasn’t the setlist (below) … it was the fact that Tommy Lee had to bow out from performing just 5 songs into their set due to broken ribs.

Tommy announced that he cracked his ribs two weeks earlier and was already performing against doctors orders. Tommy Clufetos from Ozzy Osbourne’s band took over and the emergency back up drummer and finished the set and presumably will continue on the tour until Lee is healthy enough to jump back in.

This isn’t the first time Motley Crue has had to go on without Tommy Lee, in 2000 the band went out on their ‘New Tattoo Tour’ with Samantha Maloney from Hole filling for then Ozzy Osbourne drummer Randy Castillo who was filling in for Tommy Lee after Lee left the band.

In 2006, Motley Crue was forced to replace Tommy Lee for a few shows after Lee injured his wrist and was unable to play. For these shows his drum tech Harvey Warren filled in and Lee sat beside the drum kit drumming along on a drum pad on his knee while still making an appearance on stage during the show.
