So I read a meme on Facebook that says the Billboard #1 song from your 14th birthday is the song that will define your life. Before you rush to Google, let’s first try to understand the statement “define your life.”

To me, “define your life” is extremely difficult with everything… but music! I don’t know about you but music has a way of bending my mind to the past, present and future. I love when a song takes me back to the first time I heard it! For example, every time we play “Basket Case” by Green Day on JACK I remember driving in Fiona Robertson’s brother’s grey Ford Topaz down Oulette Avenue in Windsor, Ontario cranking that song!

Did that song define my life? Not quite, but there are songs and full albums that would. Let’s begin.

So on my 14th birthday, the #1 song was Micheal Jackson’s “Black or White.”

I lucked out. The subject matter of my life-defining song is very powerful.

“I said if you’re thinkin’ of being my baby
It don’t matter if you’re black or white
I said if you’re thinkin’ of being my brother
It don’t matter if you’re black or white”

I love it!

I kind of felt bad for my wife when she checked her song. Her life-defining song is Wilson Phillips “Release Me.” Come on! I mean, if you had to have Wilson Phillips define your life I’d hope it would be “Hold on”.

What’s worse for my wife is if she would have been born two weeks earlier, her life-defining song would have been Jon Bon Jovi’s “Blaze of Glory.” There might not be a better life-defining song!!

What about you? What was the number one song on your 14th birthday? And does it define your life?
