The Sega Genesis was released on this day in 1989, making Nintendo’s biggest rival almost 30 years old! We spent countless hours playing the Genesis in the ’90s (heck, we still dust it off from time to time), so when we had to compile 6 reasons why we love the Sega Genesis we knew it would be easy!

  1. NHL ’94. Perhaps the best hockey video game ever, NHL ’94 had it all. Real rosters, smooth gameplay, one-timers and of course, the ability the make guys’ heads bleed. This was immortalized in the 1996 cult classic movie Swingers.
  2. The uncensored version of Mortal Kombat. FINISH HIM!
  3. The 3 button controller. Just think about it… before the Genesis all the games we played at home were either one or two button. The third button opened up a whole new set of more complicated button combinations and the controller was SO much more comfortable than the blocky Nintendo controller.Sega Genesis 3 button Controller
  4. Sonic the Hedgehog! Initially perceived as a poor-man’s Mario, Sonic was an awesome game in it’s own right. The graphics and music were great, the super speed was fun and it was a game you could pick up and play over and over. Fun fact: rumour persists that Sonic superfan Michael Jackson created a never released soundtrack for Sonic 3!
  5. Speaking of Michael Jackson, don’t forget about Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker!! Our music director still has an original copy.
  6. In Brazil, the demand for Sega Genesis is so high, a company called Tectoy announced in 2016 it would begin manufacturing them. The Genesis reportedly sells about 150,000 units per year in Brazil to this day, which is comparable to the amount of PlayStation 4 consoles sold in the country every year.
