The man behind some of the most iconic films of the ’70s and ’80s is back with another blockbuster. Steven Spielberg directs the upcoming sci-fi epic Ready Player One and if you’ve seen the trailer (or read the book) you’ve probably noticed all the ’80s nostalgia packed into the story. Well, it turns out that the mind behind Jaws, E.T., Indiana Jones, Hook, Jurassic Park and more has a pretty good idea as to why ’80s nostalgia is so popular right now.

“I think we’re nostalgic for the ‘80s because it was a stress-free decade” – Steven Spielberg

He’s definitely got a point there! The ’80s were a simpler time. The Cold War was winding down, people weren’t constantly glued to their phones and we weren’t being bombarded by (fake) news stories, targeted ads and reality TV.

And thanks in large part to the cultural influence of Spielberg’s amazing movies (and YouTube), the ’80s remain one of the “coolest” decades, even for those who weren’t born yet.

Spielberg didn’t just direct this nostalgia-heavy film, he also picked the songs for the soundtrack! Check out all the awesome song choices he made below and click here to listen to the soundtrack in all its nostalgic glory!
