On Tuesday night the legendary Bob Dylan took the stage at Rogers Arena, more than 50 years after his first Vancouver performance at the Q.E. Theatre in April 1965. While the world has changed drastically in those 52 years, some things haven’t. And one of those things is the voice of Bob Dylan.

Yes, he wasn’t blessed with the booming pipes of Freddie Mercury and his tendency to “mumble” can make it a challenge to decipher his lyrical labyrinth. However, as soon as his voice came across the speakers on Tuesday night, the audience was spell-bound by a true living legend.

Even though he is 76 years old, his voice was as potent as ever and what he lacks in showmanship he more than makes up for in substance. With a simple stage setup and a supremely tight band (he’s toured with a few of the members for decades), the crowd behaved more like they were at the theatre than an arena concert and that is a testament to the respect Bob Dylan commands. Every person in Rogers Arena was just happy to have the privilege of seeing a living legend do his thing.

Check out this footage of Bob covering fellow legend Frank Sinatra’s “Melancholy Mood”. (note: this was one of the first songs Frank Sinatra ever recorded)

Bob Dylan in the flesh, how about that

While Mr. Dylan didn’t play hits such as “Like A Rolling Stone”, “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35” or “The Times They Are a-Changin”, that’s not really his style. Instead he focused on a varied set that was sprinkled with covers, newer material and classic stuff. Here’s the setlist.

Setlist

  • Things Have Changed
  • Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right
  • Highway 61 Revisited
  • Why Try to Change Me Now (Cy Coleman cover)
  • Summer Days
  • Make You Feel My Love (which has been covered by Adele)
  • Duquesne Whistle
  • Melancholy Mood (Frank Sinatra cover)
  • Stormy Weather (Harold Arlen cover)
  • Pay in Blood
  • Once Upon a Time (Tony Bennett cover)
  • Tangled Up in Blue
  • Early Roman Kings
  • Desolation Row
  • Soon After Midnight
  • That Old Black Magic (Johnny Mercer cover)
  • Long and Wasted Years
  • Autumn Leaves (Yves Montand cover)

Encore

  • Blowin’ in the Wind
  • Ballad of a Thin Man

Thank you Mr. Dylan and we hope to see you again in Vancouver soon!
