Today is MCA Day, a celebration of the life of Adam Yauch, also known as MCA, Nathanial Hörnblowér, Bloach, Abednego and/or Gary.

I’ll be honest, I’m a Hip Hop head.

“What does that mean, Eric?”

It means, I love Hip Hop: the culture, the history and everything about it. From its creation, on the corner of Sedgwick and Cedar in the Bronx, New York, to it’s slow and painful death; I still respect the art.

MCA Day is important and I celebrate it every year.

But… I don’t like the Beastie Boys.

Ya, I said it!

I feel the same way about Kiss. (Put the makeup back on and stop being so creepy Gene).

I don’t like the Beastie’s or Kiss, but I would go to a concert and would never talk smack about them. Unless it is Gene Simmons the guy is just an egotistical snake (I base that off his TV show NOT his music).

Same goes for Elvis. He stole rock and roll and claimed it as his own. He also never grew as an artist; Elvis, on Day 1, sounded exactly the same as his last record.

All I’m saying is, even if a certain type of music is not really your thing, maybe you can get some joy out of knowing the artist is doing it for the right reasons and that they are possibly inspiring a whole generation of musicians that may actually be good.

So even if you are not a fan of the Beastie Boys, take this day to remember the contribution that Adam Yauch made to music and the path he helped pave for generations to come.

Respectfully.

– Eric
