“This initiative encourages safety and inclusion for all who participate in sports, including LGBTQ athletes, coaches, and fans. This night also coincides with the National Hockey League’s Hockey is for Everyone™ initiative where each NHL team will host a night to celebrate the diversity of hockey’s athletes and fans.”

The ‘You Can Play’ initiative was launched in 2012 in honour of Brendan Burke (the son of former Canucks general manager Brian Burke)  who passed away in a car accident shortly after coming out.
