Jotted on a piece of paper at Mount Temple School in Dublin was a simple statement: “Drummer seeks musicians to form band.”

Auditions for the ‘Larry Mullen Band’ were held the following weekend, and sure enough, U2 was born. It’s been 40 years since that fateful day, September 25th, 1976.

By the late 80s the band was a huge success, with The Joshua Tree hitting number-one in more than 20 countries in 1987.

Welcoming in the 90s, the band had a fresh sound that also brought about a new standard in live musical performance. This wouldn’t be the first or last time the band reinvented themselves.

At the turn of the millennium and again by 2009 the band had tweaked their sound and live performance delivery a couple of times over.

‘Songs of Innocence’ was released in 2014 and brought with it the ‘Songs of Innocence and Experience’ Tour which opened in Vancouver in May 2015.

They’ve come a long way, since that first rehearsal at Larry Mullen’s house, 40 years ago… with 175 millions albums sold and 22 Grammy Awards, U2 ranks among one of the most successful bands ever.
